Interview With Ireland's Number 1 DJ Louise DaCosta

Something not a lot of people know about me is it's a dream of mine to become a DJ, dreaming of hitting the decks in the Foundry in a Wednesday night would be a dream and a DJ I've always looked up to is the incredible Louise DaCosta. Not only is she only 24 years old but she is literally 'Ireland's No1 female DJ' and has become an internationally recognised award winning DJ.
Something that LDC is known for is her ability to connect with the crowd, from watching her myself it's so easy to pick up on the connection and I literally couldn't believe my luck when I got the opportunity to ask Louise some questions about the industry and her music.

Not only is Louise Ireland's number 1 DJ she's also in the top 100 female DJ's worldwide and for an Irish 24 year old I find this incredible I asked Louise if she ever imagined that this would happen to her?
''Much like any thing in life its great to see hard work turn into success. Although this has only been possible thanks to the incredible support I've received in Ireland & abroad. It's been truly overwhelming, the fans have been amazing!I'm delighted to be representing my country, as the only Irish female listed in the top100. Actually I expected to be giving history lectures to classes of 20 students, but instead I'm playing music to thousands of them, much more fun lol''
When did you decide you wanted to become a DJ?
''I've always loved music but getting involved in djing was a stroke of luck really. Right place, right time. I was at a gig with a few friends one of whom was djing, I stood in for them, while they went to the bar and got asked to play again the following week. I just discovered I had a nack for picking & mixing tracks. Just shows, you can't be afraid to try new things and put yourself out there, you never know what might happen!''

Was there ever anything else in mind for you? any other career plans?
''Actually I always wanted to work in education. I studied classics at university and then did English teaching with the intention of travelling and teaching history and language.
After I graduated I was offered a place to do a Masters in Classics, but it was around the same time my DJing career began to take off, so I've postponed that for the moment. I do intend to return to the books at some point, but for now I'm having loads of fun with music!''

What is it about DJ'ing that gives you such a buzz?
''I get such a kick from seeing the crowd bouncing around and having a a great time. That's what its all about. I adore music, how it brings people together and transcends social barriers.''

The connection Louise has with the crowd is something else and what makes her stand out so much so I asked Louise how she developed a connection like that?
''For me personally it's all important. You have to read your crowd and select your tracks based on the vibe you're trying to create. I never plan my set, I just open my CD wallet, read the crowd and go from there. These days a lot of DJs these days play off laptops, USB etc with pre planned sets standing with their head down, barely acknowledging their audience. It's totally soulless!I never know what I'm going to play next, I tap into the energy and mood of the crowd to select my next tune, it keeps it interesting. People pay hard earned money to come to shows the least a DJ can do is make an effort with their set and interact with their fans.''

The only flaw I see with DJing is that you miss out on some of the biggest nights of the year like NYE, Halloween etc.. does it bother you that you miss out on these nights?
''Its actually a good thing. I party with a lot of great people on the best nights. Win win! In fact I'm doing a home town show over Christmas, so I'll be looking forward to catching up with family & friends at that!''

Are you self taught? how do you work on your music?
''I'm self taught in a variety of music production software. My take on music, is big loud party sounds. When I play its all about giving the crowd a good time and making them dance, so my style of music reflects that!''

Where does your inspiration stem from?
''TJR was a big inspiration. I supported him on the Irish leg of his tour last year, it was an absolute pleasure to play alongside someone who has inspired you! He even asked for some of my remixes, which was great!

What's a normal day like for a DJ?
''Music, gym, meetings, studio, travel, hotel, club, fans, photos & very little sleep lol''

Do you have any advice for those looking to follow in your footsteps and become a DJ?
''Advice wise, do what you love, play what you love. Keep in mind, it takes time to learn your craft. I've been playing clubs for almost a decade. Be passionate about your sound, work hard, stay focused and luck will find you, most importantly have fun!

There must be something bad about this job?
''Hearing loss, jet lag & very little sleep lol''

What's next for Louise you may ask? ''I'm still only 24, so there's lots of milestones for me to reach yet. I've another big step in my career starting in January. Can't say too much just at the moment, but watch this space.''
And finally, three tips for a perfect night out...
''Stay safe & have fun!''

How unreal is this lady? A huge thanks to Louise for taking her time out to answer these for me :)

Semester 1 - DONE

I'm home for Christmas and with that marks my first semester in college done and dusted, what an eventful four months it has been lads there's been some very low lows, and trust me when I say a lot of highs but when I logged onto facebook last night it came up 'Lynda's year in review' with pictures of my 2015 summed up. I loved this and thought it was the most amazing thing ever and then my second time scrolling through the pictures I noticed half of them were taken in Carlow, it's only at that very second it made me realise how much my life has changed since moving to Carlow and how much of my life is based there thus the inspiration for this post and because it's almost the New Year!!
Christmas Ball Foundry Wednesday Night.
Last night out of 2015 in C Low!!
It made me start thinking back from when I first went down to Carlow looking for accommodation and how excited I was to move away from home and start my new life but within my first three hours in Carlow I was dropping out, why didn't I go to Limerick? why did I say I'd live here but that quickly faded after I met my housemates and we immediately became best friends.
The first few weeks in Carlow were phenomenal, I had a new lease of life I can truthfully say I think I was at my happiest, the course was great I was making the best friends and of course making some of the best memories ever as hectic as they were, I remember splitting my two knees right open on a night out, getting locked out of our house and jumping a fence all in the same night. I couldn't even describe how amazing the first few weeks were, the plotting and scheming we did was nobody's business. I'll forever remember Jennie sprinting across my bedroom window like a gazelle, not to mention learning how to fend for ourselves it was eventful.
Then there came the time I decided I would get a tattoo. This was probably the most unlike me thing I've ever done and still means more to me than anything in my life, I knew I wanted to get a tattoo of the moon and I couldn't have picked a better time than my first few weeks in Carlow, it marked a change, a time in my life and I appreciate it every single day. I for one am obsessed with my little moon.
There was of course cute little things like bowling with the housemates and Darragh and Charlie which is still one of my favourite memories, driving the streets of Carlow listening to 'Yellow Flicker Beat' I was in love with life, there was me, Jennie and Tanya's date to the cinema to see 'The Intern', dinner at Annie's and of course me and Jennie's drives which are always my favourite there's been some pretty amazing times to be fair.
Like everyone though I think when you're in college and living away from home you have some great days and of course some pretty low days, these low days did get the best of me when I deeply considered dropping out. I still feel like that from time to time but with some of the most amazing girls having my back and supporting me everything gets a little bit easier. I never thought I would miss my home as much as I do in Carlow and of course my friends and mam. I'm so close to my friends that not seeing them everyday is still a shock to me and I'm still trying to get used to it but it does get easier.

Then came the time when our first visitors came to Carlow, my best friend Crellin, Shannon's best friend Ann, and Jennie's two best friends Eimear and Sinead and when I say this was one of it not the best night of my life I ain't joking!! Prinks in the house to Tully's to the Foundry with the greatest bunch of girls in the world it was amazing, truthfully a night that I will never forget and that actually changed so much for me and really put a spanner in the Carlow train.
Although the after session until 5am really didn't help with a 10am exam the next day, yep you guessed it.. I failed that test!!

As wild as some nights are though there's always some really cute, nice nights out in Carlow too. One of the
best night's out was with the PR girls in the Dinn Ri on a Thursday night, nothing but a few quite sociables and it was ideal. There was also the night myself my best friend Tanya and Carrie headed out for a few on a Monday night and it was so nice.
Tanya is one of the most special people in my life and has made such a huge impact on me since moving to Carlow, trust me when I say there's not many people that could kindly put up with my 3am rambles and drunken raps but this girl does it and I love nothing more than heading into college for tea and a rice cake with this lady.
There is the calm nights of course, but the wild ones? haha well yes there's been a few I can't count how many times I've said 'this is the best night of my life' especially after one night out with Jennie when my favourite shoe broke, looking back on the night makes me lol to myself but listen it was ace.

And then there's Mai Kenneally, my absolute life in Carlow and one of my bestest friends in the world. The first time I talked to Mai I knew I'd love this girl forever and to this day she's never once left me down, she's the one I tell everything to and bless her she's always the one who tries her best to get me out of sticky situations on a Thursday morning.

One thing I'm so thankful for Carlow for is meeting this girl, I've made a friend for life and adore the bones of her.. and here's a typical Wednesday night/ Thursday morning convo between me and Mai D'hoe and when I say some 'bad Thursday situations' there's been quite a few, I won't even begin to discuss them on this but Thursday's in Carlow can be fairly gloomy to say the least!!
Then there was Halloween in Carlow... okay so Halloween, it's my favourite time of the year but the foundry that night.... bad night!! bad, bad, BAD night. That being said it was one of the most eventful nights I've had in Carlow and deary me was there some apologies to be said on Thursday morning but that all comes with the student life so I'm told!!

Shit got real then in Carlow when we realised we were college students and had exams and assignments due, there was group work, a lot of exams (which we won't talk about because 2016 is a fresh start) and even a presentation for us to lash into. I can't even begin to tell you how many hours myself and Mai totted up a week in the library but trust me when I say, there probably wasn't enough .. haha but we'll learn ;)

Carlow has literally changed my life so much and in such a few short months that I can't even expand on it because I can't understand it myself.
It's taught me so so much about friendship especially my friendship with the girls back home in Tipperary, I realised how much I need them in my life and how much I depend on them daily but it's also told me that you will never stop making new friends. I've made two sisters Jennie and Shannon who literally have no idea how much they mean to me even if we don't always see eye to eye, living with the girls has really taught me so much and in a weird way really matured me.
I won't go into detail on all the other friends I've made because I've spoke about them before but Emma Hall, another one of my best friends who's there for me 24/7, I can just sit and have a laugh with Emma all the time, I love her to bits, Annie...my inspiration!!
Erica, Rachael, Abbie, Michelle, Eimear and Megan who literally lights up my day everytime I see her... such an amazing bunch of girls who I'm so lucky I've met because they've each brought something new to my life and I appreciate it so much.

Carlow has literally messed with my head so much, I don't think I've ever been as confused, mixed up, lost or excited all at the same time, it's really like I'm on one big adventure and I've no idea where I'm going. It's helped me get over a few things but also stir up some interesting emotions, my life has changed so much in Carlow during 2015 and I'm so grateful for everything :-)

The Christmas Tractors Of Carrick On Suir 2015

One of the biggest and greatest events on the Carrick On Suir calendar is the tractor run and this year certainly did not disappoint when I can almost go as far and say it was one of the greatest things I've experienced this year. I don't think there's even been a time when I've been more proud than to be from Carrick On Suir, logging onto facebook Sunday morning to see the tractor run featured on breakingnews.ie and Joe.ie, the brainbox behind it all Stuart Downie did such an amazing job and really went out of his way to put Carrick on the map.

For those of you who have been living under a cave and haven't heard of the Christmas tractors of Carrick On Suir then you clearly don't know me because from the first of December all I talked about was these tractors and how excited I was, not to mention the Late Late Toy Show's 'Fear The Deere' Michael Hayden would be attending so I was literally unable to contain my excitement.
The tractor run is basically a parade of tractors which go through the town, but these aren't normal tractors these are the most done up, extravagant, Christmassy tractors and it's unreal.
Saturday was one of the most miserable days I've seen all year, now when I say it was a day for the ducks, it was a day ONLY for the ducks but that didn't stop us, or the thousands of people who took to the streets to watch the parade. It began at 5pm with Christmas music blaring up the main street and the Christmas lights lighting up the street, I can't even begin to explain to you what the atmosphere was like but I loved it, an entire community coming together...very Christmas With The Kranks.
It was the most amazing evening in Carrick and I'm so proud to be a Carrick gal this week, a massive huge congratulations and well done to Stuart and everyone who was involved it was a mega success and I cannot wait until next year, if you want to catch up on the 2014 tractors you can read what I wrote on them here and here and of course if you want to watch the tractors you can do so here :)
 Bring on 2016!!

My First Filling

Something extraordinary happened to me last Tuesday, something that doesn't happen all the time, something that will stay with me for the rest of my life and something that is for a matter of fact....life changing and that is going to the dentist and getting the dreaded filling.
Before I even begin talking about this 'experience' I feel like I should brief you on how horrific I find the dentist, needles are one of my biggest fears and as for the dentist..well that's self explanatory.
In my twenty years on this planet I never once got any work done to my teeth opposed to the odd painless polish now and then so having to go get this filling...well, the world almost stopped spinning.

I knew this time would come, when I went to the dentist about a year ago he told me 'there's a potential filling over there you may have to get that done soon' yep, no problem, don't worry about that I'll be straight back... one year later I finally got the courage (okay I had no courage except pain so had to go.) This all started a few weeks ago, I got 'the pain' and it hit me 'Shit I need to get to the dentist' but after talking to the college friends and watching YouTube videos - this one actually helped me I decided I could do it and that I did, also watching YouTube videos...not the best idea!!

My Story...

It was a Tuesday, a miserable dull, dreary Tuesday and I had come home from college to ring the dentist and book an appointment. The earliest I could get was on Friday and you know what? that was fine, yes I was in agony but Friday was the day I'd be going under the needle (the needle was the part I was dreading the most) and I was surprisingly okay with that, that was of course until they rang at 3 O'clock on Tuesday telling me to come over straight away...well I never, I almost had a heart attack.. NOW?!!!! NOW?!!! what do you mean NOW?!! No, Friday I was set for Friday no way was I going now... long story short I was brought straight over and went into see the dentist.
He knew straight away I needed a filling but the main question was how he was going to do it? I mean I couldn't stand up, I was shaking, I was on the verge of passing out, there was 0% chance I'd be having a needle put into my mouth and the dentist knew this full well before I even told him, which of course I did..again, and again..and a few more times!!
He sent me away with a prescription, three tablets which would sedate me and keep me calm for the horrific experience I was about to face and one hour later, sedated and completely off my nugget I was back in the dentist chair and ready for my injection...yep, ready!! Come at me needle.
I had my best friend Crellin come in with me and hold my hand (just because my mother had to go to work and I needed some encouragement) yes I'm twenty but this was traumatic, and five minutes later I was injected and felt nothing in my mouth.. it was a weird aul feeling now I must admit can't say I enjoyed the numbness but I'd rather that than the pain I originally had.

When I was completely numb the dentist began the work, scraping and drilling and doing a heap of horrible stuff but ten minutes later I was done and free and feeling like a queen (and still slightly loopy from the pills) but I had done it, conquered my fear and gotten my first tooth work.
I can't say it's a pleasant feeling, not painful just uncomfortable but if (I'm going back in the New Year) I had to go to the dentist again I wouldn't be as fearful, I have the best dentist in the world so literally without a doubt one of the biggest achievements of 2015... Going to the dentist and getting a filling.
Don't worry you can congratulate me and pat me on the back next time you see me!!
And let me tell you this, A coward dies a thousand deaths!!!
