Find Your Dream Job: Events and Promotions

As part of my new career series I'm very excited to introduce you to my first guest and that is the extremely talented Zoe Forde from http://www.ibelieveinromeo.blogspot.ie/.
 Zoe writes a very successful mental health blog which is something I would definitely recommend you checking out. As well as blogging this very successful 22 year old works in events, something I personally have huge interest in and she's taken her time out to explain to us a little bit about her job, and what a day in her shoes is really like.
Job Title:Events and Promotions Officer
Description of your job, and the industry itself: 
My position is a little bit of everything from marketing to PR to event management.
The industry is massive; you can always find job advertisements for communications/marketing assistants on everything from LinkedIn to ActiveLink (the website for non-profit organisations). But it’s also very competitive. A typical job gets 60 odd applications for the role.

Entry Routes:I completed a BA in English and History  & a HDIP Social Policy. However, it was more my extracurricular activity in societies, committees and crews that gave me the skills for the role! I had a huge list of experience in public speaking, press releases, team management, creating publications and website management when I graduated.
Over the last year I have also completed communications internships in two not-for-profits.


 What's a typical day of work like for you: Follow up on emails, follow up on phone calls, writing/researching/issuing press releases, talking to newspapers, scouring the internet for contacts, talking to agents, lots of brainstorming and planning…
The best part of the job:The people. I love roles where I get to interact with new people on a daily basis.
The worst part of the job: Phone Calls - I used to have a lot of anxiety about phone calls. I still find it hard to make calls in front of other people, but if I go into a quiet room by myself I’m grand!!

What are some of the most important things you need to know about this job?
It’s all go. Chances are, you won’t be working 9-5 and must be flexible. 
You have to be friendly and positive at all times (or at least most of the time!) as you’re dealing with people constantly.
 Being super organised also helps.

What kind of expectations did you have on this job before you got into it, and did it live up to them?
I expected this position to be really busy; I was coming in to work on a national event just 3 weeks before it took place. It’s been a lot of fun so far, and I’ve definitely enjoyed it and am constantly learning in the role!

Finally What advice can you give people breaking into the industry?
Work hard. Unfortunately, graduates are expected to do internhips now. It's become almost impossible to walk into a job, but don’t let that dishearten you!
Use your time in college to hone your skills and gain experience. Try and find experience in everything you do – whether it’s organising a blogger meet-up or event; that’s event management experience! Or getting products for free to review; that’s promotions!
